Very few businesses are judged daily. A newspaper is: it must arrive, it must be right, and it must be worth the price of the day before. Sandesh has met that test every morning since 1923 — through the last years of colonial rule, through the formation of Gujarat as a state, and through the arrival of television, the internet and the smartphone.
Falgunbhai Patel has been part of that discipline since 1974 and leads it today. The record that follows is drawn from the public documents of a listed company, from independent media-ownership research and from readership studies — set out plainly, without embellishment.
02 / Profile
The Sandesh Limited was incorporated as a public limited company in 1943, twenty years after the newspaper itself was founded. In 1958 the title passed to Chimanbhai Patel, whose stewardship changed its trajectory. His son, Falgunbhai Patel, joined the company in 1974 and today serves as its Chairman and Managing Director.
That sequence matters more than it first appears. A regional-language newspaper is not an asset that can be bought into relevance; its standing is accumulated slowly, edition by edition, in a language and a geography that its readers know intimately. Leadership of such a title is therefore less about reinvention than about custody — knowing exactly what must not change, and being unsentimental about everything else.
The everything-else has been considerable. Until 1984 Sandesh was a single-edition paper published from Ahmedabad. Over the following fourteen years it opened presses in Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Bhavnagar, and today it publishes seven editions. In 2013 the group launched Sandesh News, a round-the-clock Gujarati news channel. Digital properties, an e-paper archive, weekly titles, an out-of-home division and a real-estate arm now sit alongside the daily.
Beyond the media group, Falgunbhai Patel holds directorships across a set of family investment, trading and estate companies, and the group’s interests extend into chemicals, real estate, investments and stockholding. The through-line is a preference for assets that are held rather than traded — a disposition that a daily newspaper both requires and rewards.

03 / Journey
The story of Sandesh is a story of custody passing between hands that each understood the paper differently — and of a market that changed around it far more than the paper changed itself.
1923
Started in Ahmedabad by Nandlal Bodiwala, a freedom fighter and journalist, as a small evening Gujarati daily.
1958
Chimanbhai Patel takes charge as Chairman and Managing Director; circulation begins its long climb.
1974
Falgunbhai Patel’s association with The Sandesh Limited begins on 27 November 1974.
1985–2013
New editions at Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Bhavnagar; then a 24-hour Gujarati news channel in 2013.
04 / Work
The role spans a daily newspaper, a broadcast newsroom, a digital publishing operation and a set of allied businesses — each with a different clock, all answerable to the same name.
01
Sandesh in seven editions, supported by weekly titles including Agro Sandesh and Stree. Presses, distribution and deadlines across Gujarat and Mumbai.
02
Sandesh News, a 24-hour Gujarati news channel launched on 24 October 2013, extending the masthead into continuous coverage.
03
Web and app publishing, an e-paper archive and an international edition — the same journalism, released on the reader’s schedule rather than the press’s.
04
Out-of-home media, brand activation, real estate and financial services, alongside family interests in chemicals, investments and stockholding.
05 / Impact
The measurable part of the contribution is reach. The less measurable part is that a Gujarati-language daily has remained independent, family-held and commercially viable across a century of upheaval.
Readership at scale
The Indian Readership Survey recorded 8,256,000 readers for Sandesh in 2019 — the second-largest readership of any newspaper in Gujarat.
Language as infrastructure
A Gujarati daily is not a translation of the national conversation. It sets the terms of a regional one — for farmers, traders, small manufacturers and households who read in their own language first.
Held, not traded
The Patel family holds 74.81 per cent of The Sandesh Limited, with the balance publicly traded. Control and accountability sit in the same place.
