BeginningsA freedom fighter starts an evening paper
Sandesh was founded in Ahmedabad in 1923 by Nandlal Bodiwala, a freedom fighter and journalist, and published on a small scale as a Gujarati-language evening daily. It appeared in pre-independence India, in a city that was then at the centre of the national movement.
The choice of language was the founding decision. A Gujarati paper addressed itself to a readership that English-language titles were not speaking to, and it committed the paper to the fortunes of a specific region rather than to a national audience.
